The Form Rsin(x+a) and Rcos(x+a) | Year 2 Pure | A Level Maths
Rewriting a sum of sin and cos in the harmonic form is a powerful technique that simplifies maxima, minima and equation-solving problems. In this lesson you will learn how to express a cos theta + b sin theta in the equivalent forms R cos(theta +/- alpha) or R sin(theta +/- alpha), find R and alpha, and use the form to solve equations such as a cos theta + b sin theta = c in a given interval. The technique is also a regular feature of modelling problems.
