Simplifying surds is a foundational skill that allows you to express irrational numbers in their simplest exact form. In this lesson you will learn how to identify the largest square factor of a number under a root, rewrite expressions such as sqrt(50) as 5 sqrt(2), and combine surds after simplification. This technique is essential when solving quadratic equations using the formula or completing the square, and whenever exact answers are required in trigonometry or calculus.
