Proof By Exhaustion | Year 1 Pure | A Level Maths

Proof by exhaustion is a method that establishes a result by checking every possible case in a finite list. In this lesson you will learn how to identify when this approach is appropriate, structure a complete case analysis, and combine the cases into a watertight conclusion, for example proving that for prime p with 3 < p < 25 the expression (p – 1)(p + 1) is a multiple of 12. This technique features frequently in proof questions and supports broader AO2 reasoning skills.
