The Factor Theorem | Year 1 Pure | A Level Maths

The factor theorem is a powerful result that connects roots and factors of a polynomial. In this lesson you will learn that if f(x) = 0 when x = b/a, then (ax — b) is a factor of f(x), and use this to test possible factors, identify roots of polynomials, and fully factorise cubic expressions such as x^3 + 3x^2 — 4 and 6x^3 + 11x^2 — x — 6. The theorem is regularly tested and underpins many curve-sketching and equation-solving problems.
