Direct integration of sin^2 x and cos^2 x requires a trig identity to convert the integrand into a friendlier form. In this lesson you will learn how to use the cosine double angle formulae to integrate sin^2 x, cos^2 x and cos^2 (3x), use the standard integral of sec^2 x, and rearrange the Pythagorean identity to integrate tan^2 x as sec^2 x — 1. The skills feed directly into integration by parts and substitution.
