Finding and Classifying Stationary Points | Year 1 Pure | A Level Maths
Stationary points are the maxima, minima and points of inflection of a curve, and finding them is a major application of differentiation. In this lesson you will learn how to set f'(x) = 0 to locate stationary points, then use the second derivative test — f”(x) > 0 implies a minimum, f”(x) < 0 implies a maximum — and consider cases where f''(x) = 0. The lesson also covers identifying where a function is increasing or decreasing and applying the technique to curve sketching.
